چکیده
We show that if F is a smooth, closed, orientable surface embedded in a closed, orientable 3-manifold M such that for each Riemannian metric g on M , F is isotopic to a least-area surface F (g), then F is incompressible.

The Expected Size of Heilbronn's Triangles
Heilbronn’s triangle problem asks for the least ∆ such that n points lying in the unit disc necessarily contain a triangle of area at most ∆. Heilbronn initially conjectured ∆ = O(1/n). As a result of concerted mathematical effort it is currently known that there are positive constants c and C such that c logn/n ≤ ∆ ≤ C/n for every constant ǫ > 0. We resolve Heilbronn’s problem in the expected ...
متن کاملInviscid and incompressible fluid simulation on triangle meshes
Simulating fluid motion on manifold surfaces is an interesting but rarely explored area because of the difficulty of establishing plausible physical models. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for inviscid fluid simulation over meshes. It can enforce incompressibility on closed surfaces by utilizing a discrete vector field decomposition algorithm. It also includes effective implementatio...
متن کاملLeast Area Incompressible Surfaces in 3-Manifolds
Let M be a Riemannian manifold and let F be a closed surface. A map f: F---,M is called least area if the area of f is less than the area of any homotopic map from F to M. Note that least area maps are always minimal surfaces, but that in general minimal surfaces are not least area as they represent only local stationary points for the area function. The existence of least area immersions in a ...

triangles with vertices chosen from among n points in the unit square, U , let T be the one with the smallest area, and let A be the area of T . Heilbronn’s triangle problem asks for the maximum value assumed by A over all choices of n points. We consider the average-case: If the n points are chosen independently and at random (uniform distribution) then there exist positive c and C such that c...
متن کاملGeometric and potential driving formation and evolution of biomolecular surfaces.
This paper presents new geometrical flow equations for the theoretical modeling of biomolecular surfaces in the context of multiscale implicit solvent models. To account for the local variations near the biomolecular surfaces due to interactions between solvent molecules, and between solvent and solute molecules, we propose potential driven geometric flows, which balance the intrinsic geometric...
